Petri-foo refers to external sample files via a path in an XML file. I'm planning to continue this behaviour when petri-foo is in a non session - that is do nothing but provide user with option to import external samples into session for archival purposes should they wish.

Does this seem acceptable from a non-session management point of

The recommendation (to be included in the next version of the API document)
is that external files should be symlink'd to and the program should store
the path to the symlink instead of the original file. This is what non-daw
currently does when you drag'n'drop an external clip onto the timeline: It
creates a uniquely named symlink in the project's sources/ directory and
all references to the clip refer to this symlink. This way, the user can
copy/tar things without losing the samples or otherwise breaking the
session.
